About The Institute of Forensic Sciences

Institute of Forensic Sciences aim to provide well-trained professionals that are in demand in almost all fields of Forensic Sciences. As the first institute in our country to serve in this field, in the past 3 decades, out of a total of 629 graduates, which 488 of them were post graduate and 141 of them were PhD degree, who now are positioned in Higher Judicial bodies and local courts, Ministry of Justice, courthouses, the Institution of Forensic Medicine, several Police Departments, Crime Laboratories and many other establishments on various levels of forensic services. Education is provided through Departments of Forensic Science, Social Sciences and Medical Sciences, and the total number of courses -most being selective- available in our post graduate and PhD program is 115. This way, students have many options to choose from for when they are planning their training based on their goals. The number of academic members tenured in our institute is 22 and 29 faculty members who are long-serving notable people from our university are known for their scientific research, both national and worldwide. Our academic staff and our dynamic management staff are both involved in our students personal and academic problems, supporting them on their way to be well-trained Forensic Experts, who are able to work cases thoroughly. Students are guided by their supervisor to choose a fitting thesis title to their knowledge, skills and talents, especially students of the department of science acquire the common knowledge and skills required to work in forensic science laboratories after graduating.

Research and development studies are another priority. Many projects have been completed, continiued or planned in all three  departments. Students choose their thesis subjects based on the need in the field of forensic science and aim to add value to real life, expand the capasity of the nation to fight crime and criminals by data obtained from the thesis once it has been completed. Project sustainability and for the results obtained creating a multiplier effect on society, thus increasing the quality of life for people, and to ease the founding of justice are other issues we care about.

Also, we serve the public by varying our routine services, with the help of our laboratory capacity and  knowledge gained through out our education and research/development activities. For this purpose, we accept  private and corporate requests as well as requests by court orders for forensic document examination, fraud, signature and handwriting examination, editing a dictum after case study, toxicological analysis (drug screening, alcohol tests, heavy metal analysis, workplace analysis etc.) and genetic analysis (paternity tests, bloodline connections, biologic samples from crime scenes etc.) in our laboratory which possesses a quality system that is ISO 17025 accredited.

Institute of Forensic Sciences, as a member of European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI) since 1999, have been a part of the international knowledge, experience and sharing system.

I would like to state that, with our keen and dynamic staff, experience level based on our past, laboratory equipped with modern instruments, and most important of all, the eagerness and motivation gained due to our contribution to the founding of the criminal justice system, our staff that value team-work; we volunteer to serve you students through our education programmes, follow the change of the ever so fast upgrading technology and to serve our public, along with my kind regards.

ate2-Istanbul University, Institute of Forensic Sciences, was established in 1982  as of delegated legislation #41 as the first establishment to offer graduate degrees in both forensic sciences and forensic medicine, and was legalized by act 2809 in the year 1983. Same year, Prof. Dr. Şemsi Gök was designated as Director of the institute.

- As of decision dated November 11, 1986, by the Council of Higher Education, Departments of Science, Medical Science and Social Sciences were formed under the Institute of Forensic Sciences.

- In the 1986-1987 school year, graduate programs have given start with 16 students enrolled.

-Since 1989, along with the first graduates, Institute of Resim.2Forensic Sciences have led to a total of 487 Master's Degree and 137 of which are PhD graduates up until 2014. Among these graduates, 393 of them were from the department of social sciences, 212 were from the department of science and 19 were from the department medical sciences.

-Istanbul University, Institute of Forensic Sciences have been a member of ENFSI (The European Network of Forensic Science Institutes) since 1999.


The Institute of Forensic Sciences has relocated to a brand new building in December, 2017 located in the same campus area.

 Hair, fingernail, stain and biological samples collected without parental consent are considered unethical, therefore are not accepted

 
– I suspect my child is on drugs, if I bring a sample, can I have it analyzed?

Admissions are accepted only if the child takes full responsibility of any legal consequences the results may cause and gives written consent.

 
– Will you examine a sample I bring?

For custom admissions, all sampling is handled by person in charge in our sampling unit. Only in formal admissions, sampling handled and sent by other authorities are accepted if properly packaged, sealed and registered.

 
– Will I receive any discount for an analysis of multiple samples?

Discount will be granted by Institute Administrative Council’s decision -depending on quality and quantity- of studies based on thesis or scientific research, that are requested by formal or custom orders.

 
– Will I receive any discount for multiple analysis on a single sample?

No. All analysis carried out on a single sample are charged seperately.

 
– Will I receive any referral discount on follow up analysis of repeated measurements?

No. Each admission and sample is evaluated indivially, therefore charged seperately.

Integrated Quality Management System

Istanbul University Quality Coordination Office was established in January 2016 to plan and evaluate all processes of Istanbul University and to work on the recognition of quality levels through independent external evaluation process.

After the Higher Education Quality Assurance Regulation was published in the Official Gazette dated July 23, 2015 and entered into force, Istanbul University Quality Commission was established. The Istanbul University Quality Coordination Office continiues to work to support the tasks of the I.U. Quality Commission and to ensure coordination between the units.

The activities of the I.U. Quality Coordination Office are collected under the following headings;

- Evaluation of education, training and research activities and administrative services in line with the university's strategic plan and objectives,

- To determine the institutional indicators and carry out the activities necessary in this scope in line with the procedures and principles determined by the Higher Education Quality Board and present these studies to the approval of the Senate,

- To carry out internal evaluation studies and to prepare and submit to the Senate an annual corporate evaluation report which includes the results of institutional evaluation and quality improvement studies , to share the approved annual corporate evaluation report through the main page on the official website so that it can be open to public view,

- To make necessary preparations in the process of external evaluation, to provide all kinds of support to the Higher Education Board and external evaluation institutions,

- To work in cooperation with Academic Unit Quality Commissions and to provide necessary support for their work.



Forensic Science Laboratory Quality Management System

Istanbul University Institute of Forensic Sciences, Forensic Science Laboratory Quality Unit was established in May 2006 to evaluate and develop all the processes of the forensic science laboratory serving in the institute and to plan the work on the recognition and recognition of quality levels through independent external evaluation process.

In accordance with ENFSI (European Network of Forensic Science Institutes), "Twinning Project" took place and made preparations for accreditation applications. As of July 2012, according to TS EN ISO IEC 17025 "General Requirements for Testing and Calibration Laboratories Certificate AB-0477-T "standard accreditation certification. IU Forensic genetic studies (blood, cheek epithelium cell and blood stain) applied in the Forensic Molecular Biology and Genetics Laboratory in the Forensic Science Laboratory of Forensic Medicine Institute are included in the scope of accreditation.
